Recognize fake Microsoft/Apple support calls and pop-ups
Microsoft and Apple NEVER call you unsolicited. Pop-ups saying "Your computer is infected, call this number" are scams. Real tech companies don't cold-call customers about viruses.
You're browsing the web when suddenly a pop-up appears:
"WARNING: Your computer is infected with 5 viruses!"
"Call Microsoft Support immediately: 1-800-XXX-XXXX"
"Do not close this window or your data will be lost!"
Reality: This is a fake pop-up. Close your browser (Ctrl+Alt+Delete if needed). Real virus warnings come from YOUR antivirus software, not web pages.
You receive a call: "This is Microsoft/Apple support. We've detected viruses on your computer."
Reality: Microsoft and Apple NEVER make unsolicited calls. Hang up immediately.
Email claims your Microsoft/Apple account has issues and provides a "support" number to call.
Reality: Go directly to microsoft.com or apple.com to check your account. Don't call numbers in emails.
If scammers had access, consider taking your computer to a legitimate repair shop to ensure no malware or backdoors remain.
